Ghannili Shwayya

One of the all-time classics of Arabic music, from the 1948 film Sallama. The lyrics speak of the joys and importance of singing, which, apparently, can ease weary travelers, help one communicate with birds, cure the sick, put an enchantment on listeners, make girls dance, and bring the spirit world closer. A classic illustration of Maqam Rast/Suznak, and one of my favorite songs to use with beginning students, despite the vocal challenges of some of the verses.
